  1. Make sure the seller has a clear title (no loans) and that he has the title in his possession (no promises of sending the title later). Get a mechanic to inspect the car (about $75-$100) and get a CarFax vehicle history report (about $30). Here's an article with more details:

When you give the seller the money, get the title (he signs it over to you), and it's good to also get a Bill of Sale which should include both parties names, date, signatures, description of vehicle, sale price, VIN, and an odometer reading. Most of this information is on the title transfer area (in most states) but it doesn't hurt to have the bill of sale in case you are stopped by the cops.

  2. before you buy the car bring it to a mechanic to have him check it out well worth the money

  3. just tack a test drive and ask if the oil has been replaced recently

  4. Mileage and if there was an damage to the car (like if its been in an accident) most people wont always tell you the truth. you can also test drive and get a feel for it... I'm sure you have been in a car so you would know if you hear something that you shouldn't... and while driving the car should easily accelerate and there shouldn't be any problems with the brakes. makes sure its relatively clean and there isnt roaches (i actually bought a car from a used dealership and it was full of roaches) also research your car on autotrader and see the average price for it to make sure you're not getting ripped off
