  1. It's Euros. Pretty much all over Europe, not just Germany.

  2. It's Euros. As in most countries of the, you guess it, European Union.

The Euro has been introduced in 2002, and really looks nice. For a U.S. citizen, maybe it will feel strange that we don't have a 1 or 2 Euro note; these dominations are handed out as coins. The smallest euro note you'll get is a Fiver. Then there's ten, twenty, fifty, a hundred, and, seldomly used, two hundred and five hundred euro notes.

The lesser denomination than 1 Euro is 50 cents (to differentiate that from cents in other currencies, you may say "eurocent"). What's strange about it is that the 50 cent coin actually is larger in size than the 1 Euro coin. But you'll get used to it.

The euro notes look the same all around Europe, but the coins have a common front side, and the back side is different depending on the country of issue. Germany, e.g., has the Brandenburg Gate depicted on their 1 Euro coins, Ireland has the Irish Harp on them, Italy has the famous anatomy drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, and so on. But all Euro coins are valid in all countries of the EU.

You can check it all out at the European Central Bank's website:

  3. Now it's Euro's but before it was called "Deutsch/German Marks" and "Pfennige"...

  4. In Germany they used EUROS. One euro is about 1.45 dollars. The word MONEY is MONETEN in german.

Geld is the correct translation for money.

Other slang translations for money is: Moos,Kröten, Kohle, Moneten, Geldern(where i live at least), Bares... there are more but i dont know them now.

Before the Euro we had the Deutsche Mark, German Mark

    Marks never existed..

Pfennig is like cent ..plural Pfennige

many of us liked the Mark much more and quite many still count in Mark
