  1. all passes in rugby (over a long distance) are spun because it increase speed and accuracy

  2. i do it by putting my right hand at the back of the ball and my left hand near the front end and when i throw it, it justs spins itself (needs practice to get it straight)

  3. Like this ............

No actually it's done using the wrist and fingers to impart spin of the ball when you throw

  4. A natural spin is imparted as the ball leaves the thrower's hand or fingers. It would be harder to throw it without spin. Try it no matter how you throw it, over the top, one handed or two handed it spins. Unless you throw it end over end.

  5. Most of the spin is generated by the fingers. Most hookers today use the 2 handed method. however it can still be done one handed like an american football throw.

  6. there are hookers in rugby? cool, where do i sign up?

  7. Its really not as hard as people are making out. It is basically the same as if you were doing a normal spin pass. However, you have your fingers pointing in the sky. You do exactly the same timings and everything as you would passing it. Also, release the ball when you have momentum going forward so take a step forward before you throw it.

  8. Throwing a rugby ball into a lineout is one of the hardest things to do. You have to throw to a point where hands will be (with no point of reference as it is just the air).

    The solution practice!

The best way to throw is two handed....

The dominant hane goes to the bak end of the ball - this will provide the power. The other hand goes to the front (towards the lineout) and will steer.

Aim the gap down the middle of the lineout....

As you bring your hands forward the the dominant hand will move down along the side of the ball to impart the spin. The quicker you do this, the more spin you get.

If you are a hooker and want to practice.. start with a football (the techniques is similar to a throw in). After 5-10 minutes getting the arms used to that then switch to a rugby ball.

The best practice will involve throwing to the 2nd row/lineout jumpers in your team. This way you build up a knowledge of how high to throw the ball and how hard they like it thrown. Work along the 1/2 way line or similar....it allows you to see how straight you are throwing.

If you still want to do more and the other are busy then this works.....

Take a spare shirt, and tie it loosely around the upright of a goal posts. Get your lineout jumper to jump up and push the shirt as high as he can. If tied correctly it will now stay there. He can no go off and do other work. Take 6-7 paces away from the post along the goal line (roughly the distance from the side line to the front jumper in a lineout) and practice throwing at the jumper's shirt. After a while you should be able to hit the post everytime at the height of the shirt.

As for doing it during a match.....try to make the first line out a call to the front jumper. This will allow you to 'get your eye in' and adjust to any breeze etc.

If it is very windy then try not to have any throw that go to the tail of the lineout. Odds on the wind will make the drift and the ref will blow and award a scrum in 15 with put in to the opponents (they won't ask for the linout again!)

    Good luck and keep practicing!
