INJURED!!! ..alternatives for running to get in shape for XC?

I am developing shin splints and because of this I am unable to run and prepare for my upcoming Cross Country season. I would hate to get out of shape and lose fitness..I figure my options are ..

a.) water running

b.) Bike

c.) Elliptical

d.) swimming

The only problem is I really don't like water running because it doesn't raise your heart beat enough. and to get into a pool every day would cost to much money. The only thing that i have easy and free access are the bike and elliptical.

so I guess what I'm asking is which one would be better in preparing me for cross country between the bike and elliptical? Our districts which is our big race is in early to mid november..Will I not be as successful by that time if Im doing cross training instead of running for a few weeks or possibly a month or so?

  1. dude my XC coach got coach of the year and took the team to state last year and when people are injured he makes them use an eliptical.  Plus with biking if u end up falling im sure that isn't gonna halp ur injury lol

  2. ellipticals are supposed to be the best for being easy on the joints and legs. swimming laps is also a very good aerobic exercise

  3. Biking is your best bet. I have it runners bike evry day while injured as well as do pool work. You've obviously expressed that you dont want to go in the pool so bikeing it is. So biking tips: When you go for your rides make sure they are long distance, 10 miles or more. You also want to make sure you arent in high gear. The faster your legs are spinning the better.  Well, within reason of course. I recomenc about 3-3 gear or so. Find what's comfortable for you. Good luck!
