Question:

INR Blood test -- Co-pay question?

Hey guys,

Last year I had an aortic dissection that required emergency surgery -- among other things, it resulted in my aortic valve being replaced by a mechanical valve. I now take Warfarin daily and need to keep an eye on my INR levels. Ever since I've had the valve, I have been a student at the University (I'm only 25...) and so as long as I paid the student health fee each semester, I didn't have to pay any additional fee for these tests.

I graduated this past Spring and I now have a different insurance provider. Today I went to get my blood checked and I had to pay a $15 co-pay (my insurance has a $15 co-pay). However, I'm wondering if this is because it was my first visit and I had to meet my new doctor? I really hope I don't have to pay $15 every time I visit (which is often weekly) for the 3 minutes it takes to draw my blood :(

I'm thankful to be alive and if I have to pay the $15 every week to have my blood tested, I'll do it, but I was just wondering if I am going to be charged each week/if there is a cheaper alternative/how older people [most of the Warfarin prescribed population] afford these tests?

Thanks!

Mike

  1. If you had the blood drawn at your doctor's, that may be why.

See if you can get it drawn at a hospital or independent lab.

Check with your insurance to be sure.
