Question:

INSTALLATION OF SHOWER UNIT?

Could you tell me if £500 is too much - I am having an electric shower fitting by a qualified electrian he has to insult the cable from the fuse box, to the bathroom, put in a new fuse box as the one I have is not enough to carry the shower, and then I have to get a plummer to fit it which is a separate cost. The £400 covers the enstalment of the cables and new fuse box.

  1. Why don't you get some quotes for a all in one fitting price, plumbing and electrics this sounds very expensive to me!

  2. If this includes the cost of the actual shower unit it sounds about right. Did you get several quotes?

  3. £500 is about right.

  4. What you are saying is that the electrician has to assess what needs to be supplied and the work to be carried out and provide a quote, this involves a site visit.

Go to the shop to purchase the parts.

Provide the tools, including test equipment.

Take up floor boards, insert cable, fit consumer unit, and shower, test and certify new works.

    Make good.

    Co-operate with plumber.

Provide a guarantee for the work and parts supplied.

    Carry adequate insurance.

Cover the cost of quotes for which he was unsuccessful.

Probably he is not charging enough, but we are living in hard times and competition is fierce.

  5. Sounds incredibly expensive to me.

To give a rough price comparison, about 3 years ago I had:-

New wiring in my living room for 3 wall lights.

3 replacement double electric sockets fitted (in lounge).

    New kitchen light fitted.

    New wiring for understairs lighting.

Replacement wiring for outside rear security light.

Repositioning of upstairs light (involved acessing the loft).

Fitting of new light in spare room (again, involved loft access).

This took 2 days and cost £250.

I know there's inflation but get a few more quotes and get it in writing.   Cables are dirt cheap, 'elecies buy these in massive drums so they are making a mint out of these with the pricing mark-up they're charging you.
