I am turning 22 on JUNE 25 and will lose my health insurance through my dad. I am still in college and do not have a job. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced insurance plan? I hope to only need it for about 1 year, because graduate in December 08

I'm looking at full coverage and/or emergency only health plans. thanks!

  1. Most group health insurance policies will cover the child until he/she is 19, but up to age 22 , or 23 depending on the policy, if still a student.

At this time, you could purchase a short-term major medical policy for up to one year. Two companies I would recommend for this are Time Insurance (Fortis), and Golden Rule Insurance Co. You can check these out on the web.

  2. Most health plans will allow children to remain on them as long as they are a full-time student, even after they are too old.  I would have your dad double-check with his benefits department.

  3. Check at your college for insurance or find a local insurance agent/broker for a short-term policy. That is probably the cheapest way to go!

  4. You are on the right track to choose a full coverage plan.

Choose a plan with a higher deductible and if you are fairly healthy then you should have no problem finding a plan that is under $60/month or so.

Just make sure to choose a plan from a reputable company like a Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Aetna, Humana, etc.

Compare quotes from at least 3 different companies to find the best rate.

  5. There's a huge price difference between full coverage and emergency care only - that emergency care is like a full coverage policy, with a big fat deductible.

You need to either sign on with the plan through your college, or talk to a local, independent agent near you for a high deductible, major medical plan.
