IOC releases evaluation repot of Annecy’s bid for 2018 Olympics
The International Olympics Committee (IOC) have release their evaluation report of Annecy, France. The city is bidding for a chance to host the 2018 Olympic Games. The overseeing body of the prestigious highlighted numerous positive points the city had to
offer in their bid. However, the report also identified some problems related to transportation as well as operations that the Olympics would face if they were to be staged in the city.
Currently, there are a total of three cities that are in the running for the 2018 Olympics. Other than Annecy, Munich, Germany and Pyeongchang, South Korea are looking forward to host the iconic event.
France has already staged the Olympics event a total of three times, each time playing host to the Winter Olympics Games. The first time that the Olympics came to France was in 1924, when the city of Chamonix welcomed athletes from around the world. After
that, the Olympics took more than half a century to come back to the country in 1968, this time in Grenoble. The last Olympic event in France took place in 1992 in the city of Albertville.
Annecy is not new to international sporting events and has played host to significant championships and tournaments over the years. The most recent major sporting event that the city featured was in 2010 when the Decanation athletics meet came to town.
France itself has been welcoming sporting events to their shores for the better part of the century. For example, the World Ski Championships came to Chamonix twice, first in 1937 and later in 1962.
In their bid, Annecy highlighted two main venues for the events. These are Annecy itself as well as Chamonix. The total cost of hosting the Olympics event is estimate to be $5.2 billion. Annecy holds the support of the government in playing host to the event
and it also has a sound transportation infrastructure. However, Annecy’s rival cities have proposed a higher bidding budget than the $42 million it has put up.
Other than that, it has been shown in a survey conducted by the IOC that only 51 percent of the locals are happy with the idea of bringing the Olympics to their city.
The decision for hosting rights for the Olympics in 2018 is still under consideration and it seems Annecy may have just as much of a chance to win as the other.
