Question:

IP Address vs Physical Address?

This may be a stupid question but I was wondering what an IP address actually tells about a person. I know it can tell what city you're located in but does it give an actual physical address like (for example) 123 Blue Bird Street?

Thanks

  1. No. People can tell very little from an IP address even if they are very experienced with all of that.

  2. An IP address is one of 32bits in length. It cannot tell much about you personally. It can only tell who owns the IP address. The IP address is usally owned by the ISP, unless your a business, or purchased one from your ISP.

So to answer your question, they can only find out information about your ISP. That's it, it is then your ISP who can divulge information about you to the person requesting it if local privacy laws and terms of privacy permit.

  3. no it does not. There not much an average person can do with an IP address.

  4. In a word, no. Your IP address can't be traced back to your address. That would be a huge breach of privacy and security. If someone (i.e. a company) for legal reasons, wishes to know the owner of the IP at a certain time, they go to the ISP (internet service provider) [usually with a court order] and then the ISP will issue the information to the person who wanted it in the first place.

You can find out basic info about an IP like you said using online services. IP addresses do change all the time, depending on ISP, but they do keep logs of who had which IP and when.

  5. Only the ISP will have their actual address location and they won't be giving out that information without a court order.

You can use one of the links below, just enter the ip address and it will give you the geographical location. Most locaters will only give a generalized area showing the city and state and the provider of the service (AT&T, Charter, etc.).

If you use Firefox, you can add-on the ShowIP browser extension. It will show the IP address(es) of the current page in the status bar.
