IP Addresses the same?

In our house are three computers connecting either wirelessly or wired to a router. All three computers have the EXACT same IP (internet IP, not adaptor) yet we're having no problems. Should I and how can I make them different?

  1. You can't make them different. All your internal PCs are NAT'ted through your router. So, on the outside it will have one IP address and on the inside, they will all have a unique address.

Unless you want to host a NAT pool or have multiple interfaces, I wouldn't worry about it.

  2. your ISP gives your router one IP (external) address.  Your router gives each PC connected to it a unique (internal) IP.

I think its impossible for most/all home-routers to have more than 1 external IP.  You'd probably have to pay double your monthly rate to get another IP address from you ISP anyway.

You may be able to use a proxy to fake a different external IP address to get around whatever problem your having.

  3. connection to a single router provides systems connected to it the same IP... no matter how many of them are connecter. however u can request ur provider for different IPs at extra cost ... using proxys won't be too effective too ... theres no problem of having similar IP unless u have to download from file hosting sites like rapidshare.

    however try this:

    *run cmd as administrator

    *type the following

    ipconfig/flushdns

    ipconfig/release

    ipconfig/renew

in the same order and each seperately

  4. If you open a command window (run cmd) and type ipconfig you will more than likely see a 192.168.X.X address. If so then more than likely each computer will have a different 192.168.X.X. This is the ip address of your system supplied by your router. The address you use to connect to the internet can be determined by going to www.whatismyip.com. All 3 systems will use that address through a process call NAT which is basically a translation table. The table would keep track of each of your computers and direct packets accordingly by using information inserted in the packet headers about your 3 systems. Search google for network address translation and you will gain a wealth of knowledge of how it all works in detail.
