IPC waiting on cities to bid on three major sporting events in 2013 – Paralympics News
The International Paralympics Committee (IPC) which is the universal principal body of the Paralympics movement has issued invitations to cities across Europe to bid for three major sporting events taking place in 2013.
The 2013 IPC Shooting European Championships is the first event to take place and will attract nearly 300 athletes and officials from a number of different countries. The Shooting competition is open to athletes from not just Europe
but also outside Europe and the contest is thought to be one of the largest international IPC shooting events.
The sport made its Paralympic Games debut in 1976 at Toronto in Canada. In recent years the sport has seen a tremendous growth and enjoys the popularity with many athletes. Moreover, in 2010 the sport also more than doubled the
number of licensed participants, about twenty one percent and is now practiced in numerous countries.
The second event that the IPC requires to be hosted is the 2013 IPC Power-lifting European Championships and it will be the second biggest international event in the games after shooting.
IPC Power-lifting will be a seven day event which is likely to see competitors lifting almost thrice their bodyweight. A total of 275 athletes and officials from all over the world are expected to attend the tournament and encourage
the participants.
Last but not the least, is the 2013 IPC Wheelchair Dance Sport European Championship that the IPC is inviting cities to bid for which is likely to involve about 225 athletes and officials.
The wheelchair Dance Sport has just recently been added to the Paralympics. The sport has benefitted significantly from the growth in popular TV dance shows and though it was not a part of the Paralympics sports agenda, due to
its demand and attraction from the public they decided to incorporate it in 1998.
The first ever Wheelchair dance sport was held in Tokyo, Japan. Last year’s World Championships were held in Hannover, Germany and both days of the competition were sold-out six months in advance of the event taking place.
Just one day is left for the deadline to bid for the 2013 IPC Shooting European Championships but the bid for the other two sporting competitions will end by the 15th of December 2011.
