IPL – A hazard for international cricket – Part Two
India has without doubt emerged as a major cricket power because ICC gets the majority of its sponsorship from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 and BCCI should be careful that they do not misuse that power. Many former legends feel that India is doing it at the present
moment of time.
Some of the stronger cricket boards like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 have been able to stop their key players from playing in the IPL and wants to preserve them for international cricket. They have the money to give additional incentives to their players but same
is not the case with all the other cricket boards of the world.
Former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Anthony-Holding-c75756 is also against IPL because it is benefiting Indian cricket only. He expressed that IPL has never clashed with any Indian series and their players do not have to face any such situation where they have to choose
between money and country.
“IPL has created disquiet in the entire world, except in India because, as I have said before and I say again, the IPL will never clash with an Indian tour and with an Indian series. It will only clash with other people’s cricket and other people are facing
the problem of either playing in the IPL or representing their country,” said Holding.
There are no Pakistani players playing the IPL because of the political tension between the two countries. One must say that it is a blessing in disguise for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 cricket as their players remain fresh and available for international selection.
Positive thing for the international cricket fans is the fact that many former greats have started to raise their voice against franchise cricket and its disadvantages.
Holding, who was known as ‘whispering death’ in his playing days, feels that the cricket authorities are aware of the current situation but they do not have the strength of character to say a word against BCCI or IPL.
He added, “But the people running the game keep their mouths shut and never say anything because they do not want to upset the BCCI and the people who are running the IPL.”
An edition of IPL demands approximately 50 days and the demand of many international players to create a separate window for it does not make any sense at all because the cricket fans will be deprived of international cricket for almost two months every
year in this case.
IPL is surely making the cricketers richer but it is not doing any good to the sport itself. Such an experiment was done in the late 70s and early 80s by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kerry-Francis-Bullmore-Packer-c71015 in Australia but it could not last that long.
The need of the hour for ICC is to take things in its own hands and make sure that they save the ‘gentlemen’s sport’ which is in danger of being polluted by money at the moment. It also calls for ICC to prove to the rest of the world that they are still
the superior cricket governing body in the world and cannot be influenced by any other power.
