IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi should clear fraud charges: BCCI

Majority members of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have voted in favour of ratifying the charges mooted against suspended IPL Chairman Lalit Modi. The voting took place at the meeting of its special general body in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820. The case has now been forwarded to the disciplinary committee of the BCCI which has been entrusted to undergo a thorough investigation into the allegations made against Modi. The committee will determine if any criminal or civil charges are to be filed against the man behind the Indian Premier League (IPL). The disciplinary committee will make a final decision on the 26th of October and will make the findings public.

Shashank Manohar, President of the BCCI claimed that only the president of the board should have the authority to order any sort of criminal or civil action against a member of the board. Manohar added that until these allegations against Modi are thoroughly investigated, he cannot be charged with any case. He further clarified that the BCCI will make sure that no stone is left unturned before a final decision is made regarding Lalit Modi and the allegations against the man.

Meanwhile Mehmood Abdi, Modi’s lawyer in the case replied to the board’s decision by calling it a ‘legal insanity’. Abdi said that the decision taken by the board made no sense, as there was no clear direction in the board’s intentions. The BCCI voted to ratify the charges on Modi in the meeting of a special body’s to hand over the case to the disciplinary meeting for further investigation. On the other hand, the BCCI has decided to file a civil or criminal case against Modi by using the same allegations.

During the same meeting, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shashank-Manohar-c89791 did not want to be part of investigations into the cases regarding Lalit Modi. N. Srinivasan headed the meeting of the BCCI who failed to accept the replies from Lalit Modi in response to the show cause notices sent by the board.  Srinivasan also passed the initial order to hand over the case to the board’s disciplinary committee. According to the rules of the BCCI, a majority of three fourths is needed to accept Srinivasan’s decision.

As soon as the third edition of the IPL came to an end, Modi was suspended following allegations of major financial irregularities regarding the bidding of IPL teams. Furthermore, there were allegations of non-transparency in the deals made for the advertisement sales and the sale of league’s theatrical rights.

Modi was also charged with planning to establish a parallel cricket league in England. Lalit Modi had said that Manohar and Srinivasan have personal grudges against him from the past and if the BCCI wants to have a proper and transparent investigation against him, these two personalities should not be part of the process.

Lalit Modi has been part of BCCI for years, but he really made his name back in 2008 when he decided to put together the blue prints of an unprecedented cricket league. The idea came about when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kapil-Dev-c70234 created the Indian Cricket League (ICL) and attracted a number of former players from across the world. An enormous amount of money was to be made and Modi knew that the idea could work wonders, especially if it is backed by the BCCI and the ICC. Hence, the Indian Premier League was born. But when there is a lot of money involved it’s inevitable that the man in charge comes under severe scrutiny. The same happened with Modi and he on his part has denied any wrong doing on a number of occasions. But he and the rest of the world would have to wait until the BCCI finish their investigations into the whole issue.
