IPL: Geoff Marsh believes Pune Warriors is better than results show
Pune Warriors coach, Geoff Marsh, believes that his team did not perform to its potential in the ongoing Indian Premier League. Despite being let down by an inconsistent batting line-up, the coach has asserted that the IPL debutants have the capability to
beat any side in the competition.
The Warriors finally broke their seven-match losing streak and defeated Kings XI Punjab by five-wickets in a breathtaking contest on Sunday (May 8, 2011).
After electing to bat first, the Kings could only manage to post a meagre total of 119 in the allotted quota of 20 overs. Five Punjabi batsmen went back to the pavilion without crossing double figures and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rahul-Sharma-c83352 was once again Pune’s pick of the bowlers
with his fantastic figures of 2 for 17.
In response, the Warriors overcame the target convincingly with 17 balls to spare, courtesy a destructive knock of 35 runs by captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yuvraj-Singh-c98364.
Admitting the fact that his side missed some easy chances of winning the game earlier in the tournament, Marsh cited the Warriors as unlucky in their debut IPL campaign.
"We are definitely a better side. We felt there were times we didn`t execute (plans) well. This was our first year, we had a tough time. We had two good games to start with against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Indians and Chennai Super Kings", Marsh said.
When asked why Sourav Ganguly was not brought into the playing eleven against Kings http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Punjab-c833, the former Aussie player made clear that it was Ganguly’s own decision. He said the former Indian skipper has been training hard and he knows when the right time
is for him to come out to field.
Expressing his dissatisfaction over his team’s top-order performance in the game, the coach heaped praise on Sharma for his consistent outstanding performances in the ongoing tournament.
"I think he is having a terrific tournament. Gilchrist worked on him when he was in the Deccan Chargers. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rahul-c83321 is a dedicated cricketer. He loves the game”, the coach added.
Meanwhile, Marsh gave full credit to his bowlers for restricting the explosive Punjabi batting line-up to a paltry total.
