IPL and BCCI need to be separated from each other: Ajay Maken – Cricket News Update
In the backdrop of a sting operation carried out by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 TV, which has raised suspicions regarding rampant corrupt practices in the Indian Premier League, Indian Sports Minister Ajay Maken has pointed out that the IPL needs to separate itself from
the BCCI, in order to avoid a clash of interests.
The sting operation pointed a finger at five uncapped players in the Indian Premier League, accusing them of having agreed to engage in spot-fixing and accept bribes. The players in question were http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TP-Sudhindra-c2706 (Deccan Chargers),
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Abhinav-Bali-c41754.
Following the shocking revelations, the BCCI called a meeting to analyse the contents of the footage, which featured a bowler making a deal for agreeing to deliberately bowl a no-ball, and also exposed 3 players consenting to accept black money and violate
their IPL contracts.
The board issued immediate suspension orders for all five players, and put together an inquiry commission, headed by former chief of ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU) http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RD-Shah-c2298 Sawani, to investigate the worrying new claims of behind the scenes corruption
in the tournament.
However, Maken is of the view that merely suspending players will not resolve the issue, and claimed that the IPL needed to maintain distance from its parent sports federation.
“BCCI should go to the root of the cause… Suspending of five players will not solve the problem,” he said.
“IPL should be at an arm's distance from BCCI. It should not be under BCCI. IPL and BCCI should be away from each other so that there is no overlapping of interests.”
He also spoke out against the interference of politicians in matters related to sports, saying they should “leave the administration of sports to qualified people who can run the sport.”
In a bid to encourage greater transparency, Maken further suggested that the BCCI and IPL, along with other sports federations, needed to come under the Right To Information Act (RTI) in order to increase credibility.
“The time has come that BCCI & other sports federations should come under the RTI,” he said.
“They should not submit their accounts to us but should open their accounts to RTIs. This will bring much-needed credibility to BCCI.”
