IPL continues to be surrounded by legal hassles
The Supreme Court of India sent a notice to the Board of Control for Cricket in India based on AC Muthiah’s plea regarding the awarding of IPL team Chennai Super Kings to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-Cements-c795. Muthiah is a former BCCI President and has filed the case against N Srinivasan, the owner of the Super Kings and the secretary of the BCCI.

Muthiah has moved the issue to court because he has considered the twin-roles of Srinivasan as the owner of the franchise and the secretary of board as a conflict of interest.

Muthiah has now sought additional documents which include the minutes of the 11 August meeting in 2009, which will prove that Srinivasan was involved in the decision-making of the Indian Premier League.

Muthiah’s senior lawyer, Ram Jethmalani spoke about these additional documents which needed to be submitted to the Supreme Court, but the court said that the that they will have to go back to the Madras High Court where the case was first heard.

Muthiah had earlier petitioned that BCCI’s decision to award the IPL franchise to Srinivasan’s India Cements violated the BCCI rules, which had earlier not allowed its officials from having stake in any of the IPL franchises. This rule was then changed to accommodate Srinivasan, a decision that is also challenged by the former BCCI President.

Earlier, IPL’s suspended chairman Lalit Modi sent the documents associated with the IPL that the Enforcement Directorate had demanded from him. Modi's lawyer Mehmood Abdi said that there were three boxes of documents that were sent across to the ED which were related to the IPL contracts, agreements and some personal details.

The case that was registered against the IPL by the ED was under the Foreign Exchange Management Act to probe into the illegal transfer of funds abroad.

This is also one of the alleged cases that are being investigated by BCCI’s three-member committee consisting of Arun Jaitley, Chirayu Amin and Jyotiraditya Scindia.
