IPL final to be played before full house – Cricket News Update
After a series of complications regarding several sealed, unused stands in the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai, where the Indian Premier League’s 2nd Qualifying match and tournament final are scheduled to be held, the issue has finally
reached a resolution, and both matches will be played to a full house.
The Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Delhi-c780 Daredevils on May 25), and the tournament
final (to be played between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the winner of the 2nd qualifier on May 27).
The reason behind the board’s hesitancy had been the abundance of empty seats in the stadium, which, unlike the other venues used throughout the tournament (all of which had housed capacity crowds), had as much as 13,000 seats which went vacant owing to
lack of official clearance.
“We have witnessed amazing response at all the venues of this year's IPL. It will be a pity if the final is played in front of a half-empty stadium. Therefore, the possibility of shifting the matches from Chennai is being explored,” a top board official
had told the PTI earlier this month.
The 4-decade-old stadium was renovated and three new galleries (with a capacity of 13,100 seats) were built as part of the renovation process. While these were used during the World Cup, they have been sealed since last October, owing to a lock-and-seal
notice issued by the Chennai Corporation due to lack of building approval.
However, permission has been granted to the TN Cricket Association (TNCA) by the Madras High Court yesterday on Thursday, to open and utilise the stands in question. Permission was issued by a vacahttp://www.senore.com/Cricket/Thomas-George-Burrows-c93472ion bench including justices V Dhanapalan and T Mathivanan,
who considered a writ petition from the TNCA. The petition argued that up to 13,000 spectators would be deprived of the opportunity to watch the matches if the stands were not opened.
The bench agreed to grant an interim injunction for a period of a week, and also ordered the TNCA to give appropriate consideration to the maintenance and security of the stands, in addition to paying all required taxes.
