IPL suspends five player after allegations of corruption – Cricket News Update
The governing council of the Indian Premier League has  suspended five players, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Abhinav-Bali-c41754, on account of the alleged
corruption revealed by a recent sting operation, as comfirmed by Rajiv Shukla, Chairman IPL.
The president of the Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Srinivasan-c90829, also confirmed that the players “would not be entitled to participate in any cricket match played under the aegis of the BCCI while under suspension.”
The BCCI also established an inquiry commission to look into the allegations of spot-fixing after having obtained and examined the footage from the sting operation.
“…the BCCI president has decided to have an inquiry for which a commissioner has been appointed, Mr. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RD-Shah-c2298 Sawani,” said Shukla, naming the ex-chairman of the ICC's anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU). He went on to add that Sawani would be conducting
a preliminary inquiry, and sending a report to the disciplinary committee.
TV channel India TV carried out a sting operation in which several uncapped players involved with franchises in the ongoing 5th edition of the IPL were revealed negotiating more lucrative deals with other franchises in the league through
a reporter disguised as a sports agent – an act which was in direct violation of their IPL contracts.
In addition to this, a phone conversation recording exposed a bowler in the act of negotiating a price for agreeing to bowl a no-ball during a match.
The shocking exposé rang alarm bells and generated suspicion regarding the fairness of the IPL matches, but the BCCI president downplayed the prospect that corruption might have seeped into the entire cricketing community, insisting that the illegal activities
were limited to a few players.
“… it will be a case of few individual players maybe out of greed or whatever taking wrong steps,” he said in conversation with an Indian TV channel. “I am not prepared to … say that this is rampant or anything like that.”
He also went on to defend the franchise owners, saying the recent revelations did not immediately incriminate them.
“All the franchisees are people of stature behind it. It will be wrong to presume they are doing something wrong,” he insisted.
