IPL teams concerned about http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CH-Gayle-c1221 and Player Retention issue for next edition – Cricket News Update
The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises are geared up to deliberate on the issue of Player Retention and the status of Chris Gayle for the 2012 season of the tournament. Both these issues are interlinked as one is likely to affect the other very deeply.
If the Player Retention clause is left intact, Gayle will be lined up against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dirk-Peter-Nannes-c54221 for selection in the next edition as the former was brought in as a last hour substitute of the latter, by Royal Challengers Bangalore, in the IPL-4. If the controversial
clause is revoked, Gayle will be free and every franchise is likely to bid for him.
Gayle, joining the Bangalore side in the midst of the tournament, miraculously changed the fate of the team with his marvelous batting performances. He was the only player to score two tons in the tournament.
With consistent batting performances, he earned 7 back-to-back victories for his team and steered them to the final of the event.
Gayle finished up the tournament as the highest scorer and got an Orange Cap. This honour has turned the batting rock-star into a lucrative choice for each of the ten franchises.
An IPL official said today, “The GC should make it clear as to what will happen with Gayle as there is no clarity about his status. If he is free, then he would be most sought after by most franchises.”
He further told, “The issue that we have raised is about the 'Player Retention' clause. We have suggested that if the IPL Governing Council http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gordon-James-Muchall-c60376 in advance rather than sending a circular a couple of months
before the tournament starts.”
The IPL franchises have presented their recommendations following a sports management agency, IMG’s inquiry about the last and next editions of the tournament. The IMG will now forward these issues to the Governing Council of the league.
In the recently concluded IPL edition, Chennai Super Kings emerged as winner. They also won the 2010 season of the 20-over showpiece tournament of the Indian domestic cricket.
