IPL5: KP Appanna’s four sinks Rajasthan Royals – Cricket News Update
Royal Challengers Bangalore crushed Rajasthan Royals by 46 runs in the 30th game of Indian Premier League, played on Monday, April 23, 2012.
The match, played at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, saw the visitors post a grand total of 189 runs, courtesy of an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 122 runs between South African run machine AB de Villiers (59) and Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne
Dilshan (76).
However, it was the mindboggling spell of spin bowling from KP Appanna that sealed the fate of the match. The 23-year-old spinner from Karnataka ripped through Rajasthan’s top-order and bagged four wickets in the process. His four
over spell only cost 19 runs.
Appanna, who was seemingly unplayable, admitted that he received assistance from Jaipur’s track, which was slow in nature. The left-arm spinner hailed RCB’s batters for posting a huge total on board for bowlers to defend.
He said, “Getting 190 was a tremendous effort. The wicket was helping me. It was a bit slow. I was getting good grip off the wicket. I needed to hit the wicket to extract maximum turn.”
Rahul Dravid (skipper Rajasthan), Ajinkya Rahane, Owais Shah and wicket-keeper batsman SP Goswami all fell to the lethal bowling of Appanna. However, it was the wicket of Rajasthan Royals' in-form batsman, Owais Shah, that the
spinner rated as his best.
He said, “Owais Shah's wicket was the one which I enjoyed the most.”
The award for Player of the Match went to De Villiers, who smashed three 4’s and five 6’s and maintained an astonishing strike rate of 256.52. The Proteas international, in an act of altruism handed the award to Appanna.
De Villiers at the match presentation said, “I would want to hand over my MOM award to KP Appanna. He bowled really well. It's not everyday that a bowler picks up 4 wickets and doesn't get Man of the Match.”
Royal Challengers Bangalore, after suffering three back-to-back defeats, has won three games on the trot. RCB next big challenge is against the reigning champions the Chennai Super Kings. The match is scheduled to take place on
Wednesday, April 25 and will be played at Bangalore’s home ground, M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
