Jayawardene reckons that Sehwag has a clear mind which helps him in making on-spot decisions. The veteran batsman further said that such skills are a must in Twenty20, as the time duration is fairly short in the format.
The right-hander said, “Viru has done a splendid job. During the course of the tournament, I have seen him take incredible decisions on the spur of the moment and they have really paid off. He is an instinctive leader. In T20 cricket,
you need to make quick decisions and for that you need to have a clear mind.”
Jayawardene, who leads Sri Lanka’s national team, believes that leading a side is not as tough as some people consider it to be. The holder of 373 ODI caps for the Lankans said that the secret to successful leadership lies in preparations.
Someone who has prepared well and has covered every area of the game is bound to face lesser difficult during the match as compared to the one who has not, reckons Jayawardene.
“Leading a side might look complex but once you have done your homework, it's not that difficult a job. If you are not prepared well enough, then your on-field options become lesser and you will have trouble,” said the elegant
right-hander.
Jayawardene, who has been opening the innings for DD along with Sehwag, is also a great admirer of Viru’s batting. The 34-year-old considers it a treat watching Sehwag bat from the other end, when he is in his full flow.
