Mumbai Indians have confirmed the news of Smith becoming a part of the team. An MI statement read, “Mumbai Indians have signed West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith as replacement for Mitchell Johnson. The Australian fast bowler
was ruled out to play IPL by Cricket Australia due to injury. Dwayne Smith is expected to join Mumbai Indians' on Thursday, 3rd May 2012.”
Mumbai Indians’ IPL5 campaign has been plagued with injuries. The franchise, co-owned by Nita Ambani, India’s business tycoon, saw their ace batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Tendulkar-c2556 miss four games due to a finger injury, later it was the Sri
Lankan international Lasith Malinga’s turn to sit out.
However, the two cricketers returned to MI contingent after recovering from their respective injuries but the same is not the case for the $300,000, Johnson, who will have to try his luck in the next edition of the cash rich event.
Johnson, who had injured the ligaments of his left-toe and underwent surgery to prevent it from getting worse, was supposed to be fit for IPL5. However, recently it was revealed that the pacer still requires more time to fully
recover from the toe injury.
One man’s loss is other man’s gain and Smith is the one gaining in this case. The 29-year-old, who is primarily used as a pinch-hitter during the death overs and bowls medium pace, will be returning to Mumbai Indians, after being
picked for the franchise in the inaugural IPL.
Smith was not at his best in IPL1, as the all-rounder only featured in four games scaling 45 runs and notching five wickets. However, the West Indian will be hoping to start a new beginning and help MI lift their maiden IPL trophy.
