IPOD to stereo?

What is the best way to hook up my I pod to my home stereo? I have an IPOD dock its a little old but the sound I get out of it sucks what would be the best channel or input for this. I really dont want to buy a $100 dollar dock for my YAHAMA receiver (everything is so d**n expensive these days) Thank you very much

You can now buy a good audio cable by Apple that goes from the i pod to stereo phono connectors. Bought one last week for £10 (about $20)
