IPhone question, I want to buy one for my friend who travels a lot and does not live in the states?

My friend wants a IPhone 3G and he lives in south america but the price of the IPhone are triple so he is going to give me money so I can buy it for him. He told me today that someone had told him that the IPhone 3G are only for AT&T customer only that he would have to do a contract I know that if you do a contract it may be cheaper but am not sure does anyone one if this is true?

Yes the iphone 3G is only for at&t. but you can get a regular iphone easily. buy an unlocked iphone on ebay or somewhere else. "unlocking" a phone enables a phone to be used on any gsm network meaning they can simply insert their sim card and go. I personally would buy the phone on ebay & send it to your friend. All he has to do is stick the sim card without ever signing a contract. (but you cant do this with the iphone 3G) only with the regular Iphone.
