IPod not showing up in itunes?

I have a Mac, and when I plug in my iPod (USB chord) it shows up as an icon on my desktop like it normally does, but it does not show up in the side bar of my iTunes. So I can charge my iPod, but not sync it to my iTunes library when I wanna update it.

It used to just automatically show up in iTunes, sync itself and then start charging, but now.... nothing.

I really don't wanna lose my library. What do I need to do to make my iPod sync-able again without losing any files?

this happened to me too but i have a pc. i called apple and they told me its the bugs on itunes so just download the new version of itunes and hopefully it will fix it cuz it did for me
