IRS Question????

When I filed our taxes this year, the agent failed to include my husbands non-taxable combat pay on line 40b. She simply put "combat zone" at the top of the form. Will we have to refile in order to be eligible for the stimulus pay?

  1. Yes, you'll have to file an amendment.  Most amendments aren't considered for a stimulus payment, but some types are, and yours might well qualify.  Be sure to note in the explanation section that combat pay of $xxxx was not shown on the original return, and include the words "please recalculate my stimulus payment" or words to that effect.

  2. If you did not have enough income to qualify then you you will need to.

  3. If there was at least $3000 of other qualifying income--that is, wages or net self-employment income--then you don't need to do anything. If there was less than $3000, you'll need to amend the return using Form 1040X to include the combat pay. All you need to do is to write "simulus payment" on the top of the form and in Part II write "please calculate the stimulus payment" on one line and "total non-taxable combat zone pay of $_____" on another line.
