I was claimed as a dependent and my parents got a check from the IRS then a couple weeks later I got a letter from the IRS saying I would get 300.00$ by the 30th and it would be direct deposet...well I don't understand I thought I was not supposed to get anything back? I got the check in the mail yesterday is this a mistake? At first when I filed my taxes I was NOT a dependent and then my mom changed it and sent the remaining money that I got for not being a dependent back..So was it their mistake or am I not getting something?

  1. The checks are being sent out based on the original filing, that's why you got one.

You aren't really entitled to it since you are a dependent, but probably won't be asked to pay it back.

  2. I realize this is going to be a hassle either way but

    1. Call the IRS and ask - unfortunately they are working overtime because of the volume of calls on rebates.

    2. Take the check to the nearest IRS walk in office and ask.

A former IRS person who has watched this says VOID the check on the back where you would sign it, write a letter to the Accounts department explaining the change about, Wait.

They will discover the mess but it will take several months.

You might also wander through the IRS website looking at rebate stuff (www.irs.gov)
