IRS overpaid my refund. (honest) How do I return the money? Should I write a letter or do amended return?

I mailed in our 2007 return. (tax software said we couldn't file electronically). When tax refund arrived it was too much. They adjusted my return and added the wrong way. I'm sure of it since I've redone the numbers multiple times. Question is, How do I return the money? Should I write a letter or do an amended return or something else? Thanks Johnny

  1. Did IRS send you a letter explaining the changes made on your return.  If so contact them at the phone number listed on the letter.  Or call IRS at 1-800-829-1954.

  2. Call the IRS and ask them to explain why they adjusted the numbers. If they did in fact adjust them incorrectly, the agent on the phone will tell you where to send a check. I have seen this happen many times, and eventually the IRS comes after it and charge penalties and interest, so get this taken care of ASAP.
