  1. its only illegal if you sell copies and make profit.

your allowed to copy for personal reasons like backing it up in case.

letting a friend borrow it is fine. if you let them keep it, its a bit different cause company would want to make money for that person so unless he is borrowing it, it is illegal.

but everyone does it and you can just let him borrow it "forever"

  2. Yes, the "fair use" copyright applies to a personal copy only. You can legally copy anything you have as long as it is for personal use only.

Anything outside of that is against the copyright laws and could possibly get you in trouble.

  3. Yes, it is. It's stupid, but regardless, the people who own the rights to that film, have the right to profit off every new person who wants to watch it. Of course, it DOES make one wonder why there are DVD burners out there, and it IS kind of stupid. But at the end of the day, it's to protect the loss of millions of dollars in the film industry. Because if it's okay for you, then it has to be okay for someone who is bootlegging and resaling for their own profit. So in a nutshell, it absolutely is a federal violation, as stated at the beginning of every dvd you view.

  4. yes very much so
