  1. advertising is paid for stuff that hits your audience, but its still general (one advert/one poster etc) Marketing comms is more specific and targeted, so tesco do TV adverts that we all see - but in my clubcard letter they target me and my spending patterns. Your letter will be different.

  2. Depends on who you ask ;)

Advertising is generally focused on creating and producing actual ads; however ad agencies usually offer a broad spectrum of services including public relations, marketing research, etc.

Marketing communications is more broad and deals with statistics, research, and more univeral communications: including product packaging, customer service standards, new product development, event marketing, etc. and includes advertising and public relations vehicles.

A company's marketing plan would include strategies for communications and advertising. But not the reverse. So a communications or advertising plan are always components of a Marketing Strategy. Does that help?

  3. No. Advertising is aimed at the casual buyer (the Public) It requires a hook, on which to hang the product and an attention getter. There is around 7 seconds attention span for adverts on the TV and less for still visuals.

Marketing communications are really between businesses, although your CV is your main effort in this area. They tend to be short technical overviews of products and services.

Marketing communications include brochures and mailshots. I have been fascinated to examine designers' CVs, which tend to be masterpieces of paper engineering, on which are printed the applicants' details.

  4. Not quite. Marketing communication is an overall term for all of the communication you do, including promotions, PR, marketing, advertising, direct mail, in-store and online.

Advertising is just when you pay to run your message somewhere.

So, advertising is PART of marketing communication, but they're not the same thing.
