by australia. However, it is not particularly 'close' to Australia. No, i am not just being tricky - there is approx the same distance between Australia and NZ as London to Moscow :)

Continent Australia (or Oceania), but a different country. It mainly consists of two Islands; the North Island and South Island.  It is located to the south east of the country Australia.

This Yank knows that New Zealand is a separate country from Australia, just like Canada is a separate country from the USA. It's close to it, and there are some cultural similarities, but don't EVER make the mistake of thinking it's the same country.

There are a number of websites that quote the following:

"Under British rule, the islands of New Zealand had been part of the colony of New South Wales, until 1840 when New Zealand became its own dominion."

In fact, at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/politics/mil... it quotes:

"1840 New Zealand becomes a dependency of New South Wales, a British Crown Colony that is governed by Sir George Gipps."

However, that did not last for long.

During 1883-1901 New Zealand, along with Fiji, were involved in talks regarding being part of the original Federation of Australia, but eventually opted out.

New Zealand is now as separate as it can be from Australia.  In fact, since 2001, New Zealanders coming to Australia, are no longer automatically entitled to Social Security Benefits here. (But not all of them realise it yet !)
