Downtown crime is out of control

We had our car broken into last week in the early evening in the heart of downtown Victoria.
Just a typical break-in -- a smashed window, our car open to the weather, a few tangible and sentimental items taken and a short holiday ruined. Say a $1,000 cost to us to net probably $20 or so for the thief.
As the lady on the police line assured us when we reported it, she gets calls like ours all night.

So-called "street people" were in abundance on every block. These may have had nothing to do with our break-in, but they certainly contributed to the atmosphere of a downtown in serious decay.
We told our friends about it, as no doubt did people from Calgary, Seattle and Liverpool and all the others victimized that day. When the excellent restaurant where we enjoyed our dinner and a few more businesses go under, the city can blame it on exchange rates or high fuel costs. Anything but on the real reason, which is that Victoria is not willing to come to grips with its crime problem.
