IS there any instrument which can be used to reduce electricity consumption in home ?

except energy saving lamps (CFL's,etc.). Is there an instrument which can be connected after the electric meter to do the same?

  1. Put a timer on your hot water heater, get a programmable thermostat (with a timer).

    No, I'm not being sarcastic! There are likely dozens of devices in the average home that draw power from the grid even when they are "turned off".

    Any device which has any kind of LED light to indicate that it is off, or has an LED time display, is drawing power even when it is off.

    Any device that has a touch-button or remote control to turn on power is also drawing power when it is turned off.

    Any device that uses a power module to alter the AC voltage to some other AC or DC voltage is drawing power even when the device is turned off.

    Do any of these sound like things around your home?

    The only way to be sure your device is really "off" and not drawing power is to plug it into a regular power strip that has an on\off switch, and to turn the switch to OFF after you have properly turned off the device.
