  1. No, formatting the hard drive won't affect the drive itself. The only thing you really want to look at when formatting is the block size. If you are installing windows it uses the default block size of 4K I believe. If you are formatting a second drive or partition from inside windows, and know what kind of files will be on the drive, you can then adjust the block size for the files. If the drive will have a lot of little files, say 50k and under in size, then stick with a 4k block. If it will mainly contain multi-megabyte files then go with 8 or 16k. This makes reading the files a little more efficient and quicker. If you don't know, then the default 4k size will work fine.


  2. well, usually there is no harm, especially when you perform quick formatting. the only formatting that will hurt the hard disc is low level formatting. but you usually can't do low level formatting without special softwares.  

  3. My personal experience : I've formatted many, many times (let's say at least 20 times) my HDD and there haven't been any problem.

    So, I'd say no!
