Sailors from around the world will gather at the Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne, Australia, for commencement of the 2011 International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Cup. The mega sailing event will begin from November 6-12 on Port Phillip
Bay waters in Melbourne. All top sailors of different sailing classes are ready to make their mark in the championship.
The world cup is an addition to Melbourne’s summer events and will be featuring the best of Olympic-class sailing. Some top Australian sailors including Australian Sailing Team champions, Tom Slingsby, Mathew Belcher, Krystal Weir and Malcolm Page are excited
to be a part of the tournament and have already confirmed their presence at the marvellous gathering.
Speaking to local media about the thrill of being in the tournament, Malcolm Page said, “Sail Melbourne is the perfect opportunity for us to compete against the best of the best as we move closer to the Games. I always look forward to coming home to compete
in Australia. Sail Melbourne offers a great experience with fantastic sailing conditions on Port Phillip Bay and top facilities.”
Page is an Olympic gold medallist and is currently holding World Number One Crew title in the 470 Men’s class led by Mathew Belcher. On the other hand, Tom Slingsby holds the current ISAF Rolex World ‘Sailor of the Year’ title.
Slingsby, while talking to reporters said, “I am very proud to have been asked to be a part of this year's Summit. It is vital to future success that the industry and sport come together to drive change through challenging times. The current business environment
has been tough on everyone and the Summit will address the issues and actions to assist the sailing community to fire up again and get people sailing.”
Sail Melbourne is the very first of seven international regattas which the ISAF Sailing World Cup features every year. After the Melbourne event ends, top sailing names will hustle to Miami in USA, Palma in Spain, Hyeres in France, Medemblik in Netherlands,
Weymouth in England and Kiel in Germany for the next six scheduled regattas.
