ISPS Handa PGA Academy Program for Disabled Golfers
The ISPS Handa PGA Academy Program is another effort by the ISPS Handa to bring the game of golf to the less privileged golfers.
The program is a collaboration between PGA and ISPS Handa and aims to train professionals for coaching the blind and disabled people interested in golf. The program is running successfully and has already held training clinics at various golf academies.
Already, under this program, five coach workshops have been held, in which 41 PGA professionals took part and learned the basics of coaching the blind and disabled golfers.
To continue the effort, another seven workshops are being scheduled that will run throughout the remainder of this year.
The professionals who attended the workshops have given out more than 300 coaching sessions and clinics. The ISPS Handa PGA Academy Program considers these programs to be the main instrument of reaching the grass roots of the blind and disabled golfers’
community.
To keep up the effort, these trained pros will give another 250 lessons, free of cost, during the coming ISPS Handa Ladies British Masters.
This event is an important tournament on the LET calendar and is a fitting place for a program sponsored by the ISPS Handa.
The first professional to give out a lesson under the program was Craig Thomas. The lesson was held at Celtic Manor and was a great success. Craig Thomas is a well known coach who has vast experience in working with disabled golfers.
Dr. Handa, the mind behind the program was very proud of the program. He said, “As we are well aware, blind and disabled golfers face a number of challenges in developing their game and to be able to provide them with greater access to specialised coaching
is something we are very proud of”.
At Archerfield Links, Craig Thomas was joined by Laura Davies, who shared the training session. In her capacity as an ambassador of the ISPS Handa, her presence was vital to the training session. She offered tips on improving the game and shared her insights
on practice.
Craig Thomas runs an academy at Wolverhampton. He has been a supporter of blind and disabled golfers and this program is just the thing for him.
