ISPS Handa Wales Open: Gary Boyd performs bad in the first round
Gary Boyd displayed a mediocre performance in the first round of the ISPS Handa Wales Open, as he shot a 17-over 88 on Thursday.
The 25-year-old Englishman was confident to make impressive strokes at The Celtic Manor Resort in the City of Newport, Wales. However, he failed to play according to his plans and held the second last position on the leaderboard.
He started the round with a bogey and shot three consecutive pars. On the fifth hole, he lost all his focus and shot ten strokes to putt the ball in the par-4 hole. Such a devastating performance on just one hole took a toll on his overall game.
He added another bogey, two birdies and one more bogey on the front nine holes of the course. He recorded 43 and lost his hopes to win the title.
He again displayed a poor performance on the back nine holes, as he shot another ten strokes on the par-4 14th hole. On the other hand, he carded six strokes on the 17th hole and faced huge troubles on Thursday.
“When I chipped in at the last I thought it was to break 90," Boyd said. "I was really struggling tee to green and two 10s never really help. It's frustrating - I know my best golf's just around the corner, but my worst golf came out today. Maybe I need
to take a bit of time out. At the moment there are definite errors I need to work on”.
He came under fire after such an unpredictable performance. He withdrawn from the event and is now heading back to his home in England.
Lee Slattery is currently dominating the leaderboard. The Englishman shot a 4-under 67 in the first round and displayed an amazing performance throughout the day. He shot five massive birdies, only one bogey and scored a 4-under 67.
"It was very difficult out there," said Slattery. "The wind was strong, I think stronger than anticipated. Just getting off to a good start today, two birdies in the first two holes, made all the difference. It just meant I had something to go for afterwards."
Now, Slattery is planning to maintain his upper hand till Sunday. He can also grab a victory, if he continues his amazing performance.
