I have internet. I have a Siemens 4100 modem, 4 of the 5 lights are lit. The activity light is not. I am able to access the internet only when the ethernet cable is plugged directly into my laptop. What I need is to know how to make my router work. I have a Netgear router. When I have the ethernet cord is plugged in the first three lights are on signifying that I have power, internet, and wifi. But when I try to connect from my computer it's says "Access: Local Only", how do I get it to say "Access: Local and Internet". Please don't tell me to shut them off. I have, in the correct sequence and back on in the correct sequence. I have my connection on PPPoE. My wireless network says it's working and I can go to the Router Manager site, but I can't pick up a signal otherwise. I have worked on this for two days, I'm beginning to hate this and school starts in a week. Someone please help me. I'm about ready to break the router and go buy another one.

  1. Call your internet provider and they can set the wireless up on your laptop from their location. I had this problem and my internet provider fixed my wireless in a matter of minutes.

  2. not being bothered to read the manual and work out how to set it up for bridged mode... to cheat do the following.

Make sure your modem is running DHCP.

Plug it into one of the network ports on your router using a network cable (say network port 1 to network port 1)

Make sure your router has DHCP turned off.

Your modem should them send dhcp through the router to your laptop... internet will then work. If your want to be able to edit the settings on your router at a later date make sure you configure it to have an IP address that is on the same scheme as your modem... ie if your modem gives you an ip address of say 192.168.0.5 / 255.255.255.0 (when connected directly) then make the router something like 192.168.0.100 / 255.255.255.0 That way you can still configure various settings on the router but use it as a passthrough for your modem.
