  1. I have no proof, but I can tell you that (red) brake lights don't show up on a red car (no contrast) during the day, as much as they do on a light or dark color car..I think contrast is the important factor.

  2. A study involved accidents reveled that drivers of brown cars had the highest risk of sustaining serious injuries caused by auto accidents. Black and green cars also had elevated risks.

Which are the safest cars? Drivers of silver-colored cars, according to the report, have a 50% less chance of being involved in an injury-causing accident than do drivers of white cars!

While the results are surprising, more studies need to be performed before we all rush out and repaint or replace our vehicles.

The scientists did not explain why there was such a disparity in accident rates. Perhaps lighter colored cars are more visible, or perhaps the people who choose such cars are a self-selecting group of safe drivers.

Color and Percentage of New Cars purchased.

    Silver 20.2%

    White 18.4%

    Black 11.6%

    Med/Dark Gray 11.5%

    Light Brown 8.8%

    Med/Dark Blue 8.5%

    Medium Red 6.9%

    Med/Dark Green 5.3%

    Bright Red 3.8%

    Dark Red 0.9%

  3. I have herd that before, but I whether it is true or not I don't know.

  4. I don't think that red cars are more likely to be involved in an accident than any other color of car. But it's NOT a myth that they are more likely to get stopped for speeding. Red is a bright color and it gets noticed more readily, therefore cops will naturally notice them first. So if you have a red vehicle you should pay closer attention to your speed.

  5. If you believe strongly in such things you'll never be able to make a little choice in your life

  6. All for the exception of three cars i've owned which haven't been red..the rest have been red in the almost fourty years i've been driving and i didn't have one crash....red cars are known and proven to attract police or highway patrol cars cus of their high profile colors or visibility..hence the fact that red cars get more tickets..but insurance wise..its the same for red cars as any other..at least here in the state i live (provided you don't get speeding tickets lol )

  7. Ode to the Red Rocket:  I drove a red Acura Integra for the last ten years.  Not only was it red but it was fast and reliable.  I didn't have a single accident nor was I ever issued a speeding ticket while driving that car.  It's not the color of your car that causes an accident but the person(s) involved in any given accident.  I loved that car but it was stolen around Thanksgiving in 2007 and stripped for parts.  I bought it used so didn't have much choice in the color.  Color is irrelevant.  Buy whatever makes you happy.

  8. I think it's a total myth myself, but my wife's ex-husband's family seemed to be cursed with red cars.  Everyone who bought a red car in their family wrecked it.  I'm sure it was just coincidence that they were red.  Only had red car one myself, years ago, and never damaged it.

  9. It is true. It has to do with the order in which the eye detects colors. The eye detects colors in the yellow-green area of the spectrum first and it detects those in the red area of the spectrum last. This was the result of a study as to why people hit red emergency vehicles. The answer most given was, " I didn't see it.". At the conclusion of the study, it was determined that they actually may not have seen it due to how the eye processes color info. In recent years, consideration of human color visual sensitivity has led to changes in the long-standing practice of painting emergency vehicles, such as fire trucks and ambulances, entirely red. Although the color is intended for the vehicles to be easily seen and responded to, the wavelength distribution is not highly visible, especially  at low light levels, and appears nearly black at night. The human eye is much more sensitive to yellow-green or similar hues, particularly at night, and now most new emergency vehicles are at least partially painted a vivid yellowish green or white, often retaining some red highlights in the interest of tradition.

  10. Some more information: First one must look at weather the red car caused the accident, or weather it was 'hit'. I would say that a more often that a particular type of owner is attracted to the red car to purchase it. I agree that the red attracts attention. On one side of the accident equation it should reduce accidents because the red car should be noticed more than any other color. I think that is reduced by the type of driver that has a red car. This is where I think insurance companies look for the rate increase- more younger, impulsive (males)  drivers are attracted to that color.

Color makes a difference on vehicles- orange for safety ie highway maintenance vehicles are most often orange. So are Schneider National trucks. Next are white vehicles- most general fleet vehicles are white.

If the numbers show that red cars are more often in accidents, I would believe that the accidents % is caused by the operator of the red vehicle.

  11. People saying "If you have a red car, you're most likely to get into a car crash" may be true.

Here's the proof & where the "myth" comes from:

Red is known to be the color of hate. (Why do we give a red rose for love then?...hmmm hmmm...)

If you've ever seen a mexican bull fight. you would know that the guy uses a red blanket or sheet because red makes bulls mad. So does this effect us (humans) the same way as bulls or other animals? It is also known that red effects some household pets, like dogs. Of course it depends on their mood.

So if you were to buy a car for the color, then the best are Blues, Greens or Browns (Earth colors). Although Yellow is the color of friendship & white is of purity. Orange is (obviously) the color of fruit. Purple or violet is the color of love (Maybe why we use red, because it's the closest color?). And black is the color of darkness or evil. So based on those, you can choose the color that defines your mood.

  12. However,  you may be the exception to the rule.   Congratulations on safe driving,  and thank you.

Red is perceived by many to exemplify speedy/sporty.    If a police officer holds this perception,  you may be more likely to be stopped.

In the past,  insurance companies have maintained that the statistics showed red cars were more likely to driven in a manner that leads to accidents,  thus the higher rates.

  13. It is the statistics of car insurance companies who keep careful watch on cars of all makes, models, colors, etc. They have built their businesses on these statistics. Ask your insurance carrier for your 'proof'. You'll find it.

  14. Red stands out and is noticed by our brains more easily then blue or a neutral color like gray or tan or white.

That's why red cars are the most likely to get a ticket.

^ All red cars, mainly sporty.

Actually I can't prove you wrong, because I believe it is a myth also.

  15. Well I think its true. My Great grandma started me noticing it. She had an 78 Chevy Malibu Blue neva once got in an accident. Then she got a Red 85Chevy Caprice got in an accident 3months after having it. My Grandma owned numerous cars many different colors, only had an accident in the red Buick she had. My aunt was hit in her red caviler not her black Suburban. My Cousin was hit multiple times in her Red Chevy Aveo finally decided to get a silver Lexus. I was hit in my Red Jeep grand Cherokee. Was never in a accident before I got that vehicle. I had a white Chrysler, blue Lincoln, and a gold van. I am now really waiting to be hit in my new RED KIA. That I got as a graduation present. There have been numerous "almost" accidents since I got this car. I think I really want to get it painted a different color!

But Now do you see Why I think this "MYTH" is true?
