ITF awards Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams World Champions Award – Tennis Special
International Tennis Federation (ITF) awarded the Serbian world number one, Novak Djokovic, and the American tennis veteran, Serena Williams with the title of the World Champions.
In the recent past, both the contenders displayed an extraordinary performance, bringing glory to their respective homelands.
In an interview, Djokovic said, “I am proud to have been named ITF World Champion for the second successive year. It was very difficult to follow up such a successful season in 2011, but it was extremely satisfying to win another grand slam title, reach
two other major finals and finish the year at number one.”
On the other hand, Williams said, “It means a lot to be named ITF World Champion for the third time. It has been such an amazing experience this year to win the Olympics and two Grand Slam tournaments, and I look forward to having an awesome 2013.”
In the men’s single category, the 25-year-old confidently reserved his world number one spot at the end of the year, regardless of the rough patch in the middle. Djokovic started the year by winning the Australian Open held at the hard courts of Melbourne.
He waged a powerful comeback against David Ferrer, Andy Murray and finally rallied past the former world number one, Rafael Nadal.
For the reminder matches, he was unable to fight back at the same pace. It was impossible to break the monopoly of the king of clay, Nadal, in the final of French Open. At the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championship, he encountered a shocking loss against
Roger Federer. The Swiss number one snatched away his world number spot after his victory at the courts of the All-England Club.
The right-hander, Djokovic, could not defend his bronze medal at the Great Games held in London. In the final round of the US Open, he experienced an unexpected crash at the hands of the British challenger, Murray. As the year progressed, the Serbian professional
did not lose his optimism and in the end capitalized on his top rank. Due to the increasing age, Federer’s was unable to put forward a strong fight and his winning momentum died down in the progressive tournaments. At the Barclay ATP World Tour Finals, Djokovic
avenged from his loss from the Swiss veteran, in a straight set match.
The 31-year-old, Serena Williams, commenced her season at a decent pace. However, she gained momentum after her triumph at the Wimbledon Championships as she prevailed over the Pole, Agnieszka Radwanska in the final round. Williams handed over a straight
set defeat to the Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova in the final round of the London 2012 Olympics, winning her first ever singles gold medal.
She proved her worth after pocketing away the US Open Championship held at the hard courts of New York. Regardless of increasing age, she plays with the most powerful and unmatchable serve precision, impossible to take over by any female professionals. Williams
is still not the world number one in the WTA Rankings, mainly due to her participation in fewer tournaments in comparison to her opponents.
The two tennis professionals, Djokovic and Williams, are most perspective competitors to become the undisputable winners in all the major tournaments of 2013, ready to set aside all the unruly challenges.
