ITM Cup round-three: Auckland grinds out win over Bay of Plenty
Auckland was able to muscle out a victory away from home over Bay of Plenty at Mt Maunganui on the weekend, retaining the John Drake Boot.
On what was a rain-soaked field at Bay Park on the weekend Auckland was able to barely push themselves to victory in an incredibly rough game. The first half saw all the scoring, however Plenty put up a great deal of fight in the final 10 minutes. Nevertheless, the away team was able to just hold on to an 11-6 nail biter.
Recap
Auckland came out strong at the opening whistle, James Helleur intercepted a pass from Plenty and was able to move the ball down field, until winger Atieli Pakalani crossed the whitewash for the games first and only try in only the third minute.
Afterward the game deteriorated as the weather continued to get worse. The match turned into a battle of forwards, as both teams had trouble moving the ball.
Both sides were forced to settle for penalties, with number 10 Matt Berquist hitting two, and Phil Burleigh matching the total for Plenty. Nevertheless, Auckland held a 11-6 lead going into halftime.
After the half both teams generated very little offence, with the best chance coming from Auckland, who could only argue after a try was called back.
The rescinded try seemed to give Plenty some hope as the home side was able to swing the momentum their direction. The Steamers held Auckland up in their end the rest of the second half, and had several chances to score. Nevertheless, the Auckland defence stood strong, keeping Plenty at bay and grinding out an 11-6 victory.
Auckland’s defence must be credited with the victory as they managed to hold off a surging Bay side late in the match. Last week a late charge from Waikato got the best of them, but in round three they seemed to have improved.
Plenty fought hard but were once again unable to claim the John Drake Boot. The weather certainly played a role in the loss, but regardless they will need to improve their form in time for round-four.
Analysis
Auckland snuck out a victory to keep themselves in the top seven. However, as a favourite to challenge for the Cup this season they will need to improve their form if they hope to steal the trophy from Canterbury.
Bay of Plenty have been inconsistent throughout their first three weeks. When the season began they were thought to challenge for a spot in the top five. They will need to improve their game before next round if they hope to be in the premiership next season.
