ITM Cup round three: Tasman down Hawke’s Bay
Tasman was able to get their 2010 season up-and-running over the weekend, with a win over Hawke’s Bay at home in Blenheim.
The two teams were evenly matched in the first half, as neither could really get their offence going, heading into the half-time break level. After the rest, Tasman came out flying, putting a great deal of pressure on their Hawke’s Bay opponents. In the end Tasman proved too much for the visitors, as they claimed victory, 21-7.
Recap
Right before kick-off Hawke’s Bay kicker Karl Lowe was forced to pull out of the match because of a nagging hamstring injury. The injury to Lowe certainly played a factor in the side passing up two chances for penalties early in the match.
Unfortunately for Hawke’s Bay they turned the ball over in their attempt for a try and Tasman’s James Marshall cruised 80 metres to touch the ball down in the 10th minute.
Hawke’s Bay was able to respond late in the half as full-back Israel Dagg crossed the whitewash to bring the game back to level heading into halftime.
After the break Tasman came out the better team, as ten minutes in James Kamana finished off a brilliant counter attack to put the home side up 14-7.
Tasman was quick to add another score when Tom Marshall sprinted across the line, on another Hawke’s Bay turnover.
Although Hawke’s Bay battled late into the match, Tasman proved too much for the visitors as they tallied their first win of the young season, 21-7.
Tasman got a strong group effort, and were able to respond quickly on turnovers. They just missed out on the bonus-point try, but did a good job of spreading the ball around. In addition, kicker Steve Alfeld was strong at the tee. hitting all of his conversions.
Hawke’s Bay on the other hand had a tough time holding onto the ball, and in the end it cost them the match. Losing their kicker before the first whistle clearly affected their game plan, and they will hope to have him back next week.
Analysis
Tasman was finally able to get their season on track with the win at home. Losing their first two matches did not give the indication of a strong season for the club. Nevertheless, they now have something to build on, as they prepare for the rest of the calendar.
Hawke’s Bay meanwhile, still have plenty of work to do. They have not recorded a win this season. If Hawke’s Bay hopes to push their way up the table in time for the second round they will need to adjust their game plan.
