i think it depends on the size of each rental file and how much other music and other stuff u have on it...what i would do is rent them one or two at a time and keep updating ur ipod, using the free space bar when it's done as a gauge of how much space u have left. i'd just keep adding more until the updater-thing tells u u can't.
