ITunes not detecting iPod!!?? help please!?

Question

i connected my iPod to the computer but it didnt open iTunes automatically like it usually does. When i opened iTunes myself, it could not tell my iPod was connected so I couldn't put my new songs on it. why is it doing that and how can i fix it so it'll sync to my iPod???
