Hi, i am 24 and three and a half weeks ago i had my pap smear that was abnormal - moderate and severe dysplasia.... My doctor wanted to do the biopsy right away, which i had done a week after i got my pap smear results. The reason why i went to see my gyn. at first was to get an IUD inserted... but since my pap smear was not ok, i had to concentrate on my biopsy results. Now i got the biopsy results back, and it says that i don't have dysplasia at all, but HPV..... still have a hard time accepting the news, since i had only one partner in my life! my question is: can i get an IUD inserted a week after having the biopsy done + HPV? please, only serious answers! i am really worried and want to know if anyone else was in a similar situation? please, help me!!!

  1. I would suggest waiting awhile.  You are supposed to wait a couple of weeks before inserting anything into your v****a after a biopsy (e.g. tampons, having s*x, etc.).  I would guess that your doc would want to wait a couple of weeks before inserting an IUD to make sure you don't get any kind of infection.  You should call your doctor and ask them what their policy is on this.  I would suggest waiting at least another week though.

  2. I don't see why not. However, you need to talk with your doctor. If any of your cells have changed on your cervix they are going to have to do some treatment. They can freeze them and do other things. I would talk to your doctor to see what his next step is going to be. Do not fret too much about this. HPV is the most widely spread STD, I think more than half of all Americans have it, I am not sure on the numbers, but I think it is even more than half. Hang in there, talk to your doctor and you will be fine! It sucks at first because it is shocking, especially with only having one partner. Do not blame them though either. Do make sure though that they know and can take precautions from spreading it. Good luck!

  3. They recommend no IUD insertion following an abnormal PAP. Doctors would rather have someone who had had a normal pap in the last year, and some doctors are even iffy about inserting an IUD in women who have not been pregnant before, and the reasoning behind that is, since the IUD is inserted into the uterus, if you have been pregnant before and have delivered a baby or had an abortion, your uterus has been dialated and therefore makes an IUD insertion much easier and less painful. But you def just need to talk to a dr of your choice where you would be getting this IUD insertion and see what he says.

  4. Sweetie, since you are only 24 years old please reconsider the IUD.  I am 43 and had one inserted at 16.  It caused scar tissue to develop on my fallopian tubes that even surgery failed to remove.  I have never been able to have any children.  If you do decide to have it inserted PLEASE make sure you have it checked regularly for any abnormalities.  I'm sorry I couldn't offer any advice regarding the HPV, but please know that my prayers are with you.
