Question:

IV antibiotics before wisdom teeth removal?

Has anyone had to have IV antibiotics immediately before getting their wisdom teeth removed?

When I went to a consultation with an oral surgeon yesterday, he said that since I had a heart murmur (which I did not know I had) that it would be best if I had IV antibiotics before the procedure. What is the difference in having antibiotics intravenously the day of or taking pills days before the procedure?

  1. I have to agree with the first answerer, there is no need for IV antibiotics unless the teeth are severely infected. If you have a murmur, you should cover any dental procedure with ORAL antibiotics (and if you're allergic to penicillin they can give you different antibiotics). If I were you I would contact the oral surgeon and ask why he was advising IV antibiotics.

  2. I have all of wisdom teeth removed, and I also have irregular heart.  I have never hear of IV anything from a dentist!!!  If I ever had to take antibiotics from a dentist, it was pills.  I don't know what the difference would be between pills and IV.  It seems that it would be the same thing.

  3. Ok.

    I disagree with the doc

you are suppose to take Amoxicillin 2g 1 hours before procedure

If you are allergic to amoxi then you take clindamycin 600 mg 1 hours befoer procedure

and if you cannot even take clindamycin then you take

    azithromycin IV before the procedire.

So IV is the third chose not the first.
