IV out patients in Ireland ... what the heck ?

Question

We went out to dinner in Killarney, Ireland, and at the next table were three men. Each was young, strapping, and appeared to be healthy. Each also had a hospital bracelet and a plugged IV thingy on his wrist. I was soooo curious and wanted to ask them what they were "sporting", but didn't. Any ideas what we witnessed? Thanks.

maybe they were ill? had cancer?

you could always cage them and stare and them like zoo animals.

Is it really so shocking that hospital patients actually venture out into the public domain?
