Question:

IVF and smoking or not smoking?

My partner and I have been on the waiting list for IVF treatment, however, they wanted us to both be non-smokers by the time the treatment starts, we have reached the top of the waiting list sooner than we thought we would! I have stopped smoking (for about 2 months now) but my partner is finding it more difficult but he has stopped now, so by time we go to the clinic on Sept 2nd, he would have been abstinent from smoking for about 2 weeks, but I think the clinic would ideally like you to have stopped for at least a couple of months. My question is - would they know that he had stopped smoking just a couple of weeks before? How would they test it? I think they may just test carbon monoxide levels etc (which are down to zero after a few days I believe), has anybody had this type of experience?

Serious answers only please, I don't wish to have a lecture on the effects of smoking etc because I already know, Thanks x

  1. Hi,

One of the main reasons why they ask you to stop smoking is because smoking can actually age your fertility by up to 10 years!

If you are already needing help ie IVF then things are going to be tough enough for you both without the added fertility issues smoking bring on.

Your doctor really won't be too interested in how long your hubby has given up, the fact he has will show that he is serious about TTC.

He may want to take a supplement like 'Wellman' this contains Zinc and other properties that can help improve sperm production. You should also be taking folic acid if you are actively TTC.

Best dust to both of you and best of luck

  2. They won't know that he only gave up 2 weeks ago.

Also get him to take a zinc supplement as it really helps make good quality sperm.

  3. The doctor won't care because it's to better YOUR chances of conceiving.  If you didn't do what the doctor asked then that's not his/her problem.  And you're right about carbon monoxide being gone in a couple days.  They won't know if he quit 2 weeks ago...Good luck! =]
