Iain Butcher takes on Phil Smith in a non-title bout, eyeballs Chris Edwards title – Boxing News
Iain Butcher, the surging young British pugilist, will enter the ring against fellow countryman Phil Smith, in a six-round non-title bout, which will take place on Friday June, 1 2012.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Paul Graham of Prospect Boxing and the ring for the bout will be stretched at Rivals Gym situated in Roberts Street, Wishaw, Scotland, United Kingdom. The showdown will be co-headlined by the
non-title six-round between Mitch Prince and Youssef Al Hamidi.
Butcher recently completed his sparring and training session for the upcoming engagement and shared his thoughts in a press conference about Phil. Iain, 20, has been in a total three bouts and emerged victorious in all.
The young lad has just started his professional career and is in his prime, the reason why he has started to eye ball Chris Edwards for his BBBC British flyweight title. As far as his talent and capabilities are concerned, the Briton has enjoyed a successful
amateur career and was recently a part of the Olympic squad where he performed exceptionally well and collected much praise from his selectors.
His Friday night opponent, Phil, is also an upcoming pugilist who will enter in his career’s third bout with two wins. Despite the fact that Phil, also known as ‘Twinny’, is a rookie just like Butcher, the Scottish proud is not underestimating Smith.
In a recent media interaction, while sharing his thoughts about Phil, Iain stated, “I know that Smith is an orthodox boxer and starts fast. I will take things as they come on the night but I have trained hard enough and not worried about anything because
my training camp went the way it was planned.”
While sharing his future plans, the young lad commented that he is in his prime form and highly motivated and can even take on names like Paul Edwards and Kevin Satchell. Butcher further added that he will, after this bout, is seriously thinking to enter
a title bout and move up in the rankings.
Butcher stated, “I am more than confident I could take the current crop of fighters at my weight, like Paul Edwards and Kevin Satchell after seeing their title fight the other week. Hopefully after that fight I can then look towards the title again, the
British and Commonwealth champion Chris Edwards is 35 and age is catching up with him.”
If Iain comes out of the ring with a win he would definitely catch his promoter’s attention who might in near future fulfil his plan of entering a title bout.
