  1. K well first u will need to stretch a lot so u can do the splits because you are gonna be sliding around the crease a lot. Also you are gonna have to have a fast reaction so you are going to just practice with people shooting on you and don't forget to stretch.

  2. Goalie is by far the most expensive spot. And with only 5 months and you not knowing how to skate, it will be incredibly difficult to make the team.

To learn to skate, go to a bunch of public skates and just practice. Take lessons. then you can start learning the game itself.

To learn, just take lessons at the local rink. But don't expect to get anywhere with it without spending a year learning, at least.

  3. Well for goalie you have so be fast to react fast hands i say practice baseball it really helps also for a goalie oyu need good balance on skates you also need ot know how to control your rebounds and make sure when you make other saves not to give it up.Skating is not a huge factor in being a goalie but its better if you can skate well.

  4. Welcome to the greatest sport on earth Steve.

I don't know the level of the hockey players at your school, but a goalie has to be an excellent skater. (If you were playing street hockey in sneakers, it would be different) Take this time to learn to skate and the basics of the game such as the rules I have been playing hockey close to 20 years + there isn't a game I don't learn something.

Don't take this as an insult Steve, but even if the tryout is walk on it doesn't mean you can walk onto the ice. Once there you gotta be able to SKATE .. and with the weight of goalie gear, that's not easy, even for me !! And mind you I have played ice and roller hockey for close to 20 years - including 6 between the pipes !!

  5. I really can't tell you much about the other positions, but, my 14 year old has been playing Goal for ten years!

Goalie is the most expensive position, to start with, you need to be big, and fast with lightning reflexes. You also need to be able to read the play, fake out the shooters, take a puck to the face mask without flinching and let it roll off when you get blamed for the loss!  It is the loneliest position too, it really takes a certain mind set to play goalie effectively. You are a key player on the team, but, not really part of it, it's hard to explain, but, my son puts it this way, "It's my net, everyone stays away from MY NET! Doesn't matter which side I'm   playing for, it's MY NET!"

If you really want to try Goalie you should should probably start with some used equipment, Play it Again Sports is a good place to go. That way, if you decide to change positions you don't have $$$$$$$$$$ invested. You can always trade the equipment in for credit on player equipment.

Oh, yeah, keep in mind that Goalie skate blades are flatter and longer than regular hockey skates, you should probably learn to skate on regular skates, then transition to Goalie skates. Call the rinks in your area and see if any of them offer begginner Goalie clinics. A Goalie coach is the best way to learn.

  6. Don't try to be a goalie. They have to be the best skater on the team.  Its also the most expensive position. And you will probably not enjoy it since you've never played before. All the pressure is on you and its your fault even when it isn't. Really any position would have its drawbacks. Offense you have to be good at skating and stick handling. defense you have to be good at skating and playing the puck and body. What state is your high school in? Is it a contender in the state or just for fun? Have you considered being the manager. I love hockey but wasn't good enough to play on the number 7 team in the country lol so thats what I did. I got to go to all the games and go on the ice for all the practices . And it isn't that much work. The most I ever had to do besides transport pucks, medkit, and water, was call in with the scoresheet. You should consider it. I have alot of good memories and friends from doing that. I even ran parts of practice eventually. and people won't make fun of you... you will be the man.
